Being raised in the American West and having both red rock and alpine meadow views of the Great Salt Lake in my backyard, my childhood was rich with experience of nature. Even as a child I was an observer of weather and clouds, often wondering about the vastness of sky and land. Today, I still choose to live in Utah after living abroad and in California, now splitting time between Salt Lake Studio and Torrey. The different landscapes and atmospheres of each location impart different moods to my work.
My painting focuses on both urban and rural land and sky, with an emphasis on color relationships, climate fluctuation, weather patterns, and cloud formations. My artistic intent is not to paint exactly what I see, but rather to crystallize moments in time that are suggestive and psychological. I am a constant observer of the colors in subject matter, highlighting all the changes we see in nature. The underlying paradox of this venture is the urgency I feel that all the stunning vastness will be forever changed by pollution, land development, and industrial incursion. It is my hope that my paintings are a reflection of my passion to encourage the viewer to appreciate the beauty and fragility of nature and all her resources.
Prior to going back to school at the University of Utah to receive a BFA in painting and drawing, I owned and operated Laura’s Interior and Boardman Design, a full-service interior design firm.
